Trump Posts AI Image of Himself as Jesus, Then Deletes It After Backlash — Even Conservative Christians Push Back
Overview
On the night of Sunday, April 12, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated image depicting himself as Jesus Christ on his Truth Social platform. The post was deleted the following morning after a wave of criticism — including from some of his most loyal religious supporters — who condemned it as blasphemous. The incident triggered a surge in online searches centered on the keyword "trump as jesus" across the United States and Canada.
Search Volume
According to Google Trends data recorded between April 13–14, 2026, the topic generated the following search interest:
| Country | Search Volume (Google Trends Interest) |
|---|---|
| 🇺🇸 United States | 200,000+ searches |
| 🇨🇦 Canada | 20,000+ searches |
U.S. search volume was approximately ten times that of Canada, reflecting the outsized domestic attention the story received. Related search terms that spiked alongside the main keyword include trump jesus, trump jesus christ, trump jesus image, trump jesus painting, trump pope, and pope leo.
What the Image Showed
According to fact-checking outlet Snopes, the image was an AI-generated, painting-style illustration depicting Trump dressed in a long white robe and red sash — garments closely associated with traditional representations of Jesus Christ. In the image, Trump places a glowing hand on the forehead of a man lying in a hospital bed, in a scene evoking the healing miracles described in the New Testament. The background was filled with American iconography: the U.S. flag, the Statue of Liberty, bald eagles, and fighter jets. Figures resembling soldiers ascending toward a heavenly light appeared in the sky above.
After the post was deleted, Trump confirmed to reporters that he had shared the image but offered a different interpretation. "I thought it was me as a doctor," he said, "and it had to do with the Red Cross, as a Red Cross worker, which we support."
Background: An Escalating Feud with Pope Leo XIV
The image was posted approximately 40 minutes after Trump launched a lengthy attack on Pope Leo XIV on Truth Social. Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pope, has been a prominent critic of the Trump administration's posture toward the Iran war and immigration policy. The pope had called Trump's threat to destroy an entire civilization in Iran "truly unacceptable" and later stated that "God does not bless any conflict."
In his Truth Social post, Trump called the pope "WEAK on crime and terrible for Foreign Policy," adding that he was "not a big fan of Pope Leo." He also said he preferred the pope's brother, Louis Prevost, who Trump claimed was "all MAGA."
Pope Leo XIV responded directly, telling the Associated Press: "I have no fear of the Trump administration or speaking out loudly of the message of the gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do."
Reactions Across the Spectrum
Conservative Christians Break with Trump
Unusually, backlash came swiftly from Trump's own base. Former collegiate swimmer and conservative influencer Riley Gaines, who has spoken at Trump rallies, wrote on X: "I cannot understand why he'd post this. A little humility would serve him well. God shall not be mocked." Conservative Catholic podcaster Michael Knowles stated that "it behooves the President both spiritually and politically to delete the picture, no matter the intent." Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has previously been among Trump's most vocal defenders, called the image an "Antichrist spirit" and condemned it as "more than blasphemy."
Isabel Brown, a Daily Wire podcaster aligned with the White House, called the post "disgusting and unacceptable," while conservative commentator Brilyn Hollyhand wrote: "This is gross blasphemy. Faith is not a prop."
U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops
Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued a statement saying he was "disheartened that the President chose to write such disparaging words about the Holy Father. Pope Leo is not his rival; nor is the Pope a politician. He is the Vicar of Christ."
International Condemnation
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she found Trump's remarks toward the pope "unacceptable." Massimo Faggioli, a prominent expert on the papacy, told Reuters: "Not even Hitler or Mussolini attacked the Pope so directly and publicly."
Democratic Response
Senator Bernie Sanders wrote on X: "Trump is now attacking the pope for speaking out against war while posting images of himself as a messianic figure. This is not only offensive. It is deranged, egomaniacal behaviour."
A Recurring Pattern
This was not the first time Trump has shared imagery of this kind. In May 2025, shortly after the death of Pope Francis, Trump posted an AI-generated image depicting himself as pope on Truth Social, which also drew widespread outrage from Catholics. During and after the 2024 presidential campaign, some supporters have cast Trump in quasi-messianic terms at rallies — though critics note that doing so himself crosses a different line.
According to Snopes' analysis, the April 2026 image combined Christian and American nationalist iconography, and appears to be a variation of another image that first circulated in February 2026.
Political Context
A Pew Research Center survey conducted January 20–26, 2026 (8,512 respondents, margin of error ±1.4 percentage points) found that belief in Trump acting ethically in office has declined across all religious groups, including white Catholics (39% to 34%) and Hispanic Catholics (22% to 14%). A separate NBC poll found that U.S. registered voters now view Pope Leo XIV more favorably than the president. Trump won 56% of Catholic voters in the 2024 election, and the ongoing feud with the pope has raised questions about whether that coalition could begin to fracture.
