Mexican Axolotl Found in Wales — A First for the United Kingdom

A critically endangered Mexican axolotl has been discovered in a Welsh river, marking the first documented sighting of the species in the United Kingdom. The rare amphibian was found by a 10-year-old girl during a family holiday and is now drawing significant attention in both the UK and the United States.

The Discovery — A UK First

On April 10, 2026, the Hill family from Leicester, England, were touring Wales in their camper van when they stopped at the River Ogmore in Bridgend, South Wales. Their 10-year-old daughter, Evie Hill, is a nature enthusiast who regularly hunts for creatures like newts and bugs along riverbanks.

While wading near a spot known locally as the "Dipping Bridge," Evie lifted a discarded mat from the shallow water and came face to face with a pale, nine-inch amphibian. She recognized it immediately as an axolotl and ran to tell her mother. Melanie Hill, 50, told the BBC she initially dismissed the claim, assuming Evie had found a lizard or a newt. After walking down to the river herself, she described her reaction as one of "shock, surprise and disbelief."

The axolotl showed visible injuries to its tail and stomach. The family retrieved it from the water using a gravy boat and drove to a nearby Range store to purchase a proper container. They then cut their holiday short and brought the animal home to Leicester.

Meet Dippy D

The Hill family named the axolotl "Dippy D," a nod to the Dipping Bridge where it was found. Dippy now lives in a new tank in the family's kitchen, and Melanie has been sharing updates on TikTok.

Chris Newman, director of the National Centre for Reptile Welfare, told the BBC that Evie almost certainly saved Dippy's life. He confirmed there are no previous recorded sightings of Mexican axolotls in the United Kingdom, calling the situation "quite unique." Newman also noted that axolotls are "very challenging" to care for, as they require the same environmental, dietary, and behavioral conditions in captivity as they have in the wild. The Hill family has since received official approval to keep the axolotl as a pet, and Melanie said they spent hours researching proper care methods.

What Is an Axolotl?

The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is an aquatic salamander native exclusively to Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City. Its name derives from Xolotl, a deity in Aztec mythology, and the animal has long been a cultural symbol in Mexico.

Its most remarkable biological trait is the ability to regenerate damaged tissue — including limbs, portions of the heart, brain tissue, and even parts of the spinal cord — making it a widely used model organism in scientific research worldwide.

Despite their abundance in captivity, wild axolotls are in serious trouble. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the species as Critically Endangered, with an estimated wild adult population of just 50 to 1,000 individuals. Their habitat in Lake Xochimilco has been severely degraded by the expansion of Mexico City, water pollution, and the introduction of invasive species such as tilapia and carp. The captive population is estimated at around one million individuals, many of them descendants of just 34 axolotls shipped to France for scientific research in 1864.

Why Axolotls Have Become So Popular

The surge in public interest in axolotls — particularly among children and teenagers — is closely tied to gaming and social media. In June 2021, Minecraft, the sandbox game with over 300 million copies sold worldwide, introduced axolotls as part of its Caves & Cliffs update, exposing the creature to more than 140 million monthly players. Developer Mojang Studios stated that the inclusion was intentional, part of a broader effort to raise awareness about endangered animals. Roblox, Fortnite, and TikTok further amplified the axolotl's profile in the years that followed.

Evie's discovery resonates so strongly in part because of this cultural backdrop. For a generation of children who first encountered axolotls through video games, finding one in a Welsh river — thousands of miles from its native Mexico — carries an almost storybook quality. Evie herself knew what the creature was precisely because she had watched videos about them on YouTube.

How Did an Axolotl End Up in Wales?

Axolotls are not native to the United Kingdom. Experts believe the Bridgend specimen was most likely an abandoned pet. Axolotls are notoriously demanding to keep in captivity — they require carefully controlled water temperatures, precise water quality, and specific diets — and it is not uncommon for owners to release them when care becomes difficult. The irresponsible release of exotic animals into local waterways poses risks to native ecosystems and is strongly discouraged by wildlife authorities.
