Montreal Côte-des-Neiges Shooting: Officer and Civilian Killed, Suspect Also Dead

On June 22, 2026, a shooting in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood left a police officer and a civilian dead, with the lone armed suspect also killed by responding officers. The incident has driven a significant surge in Google Search interest across multiple countries, currently trending on Kiolix Pulse across 5 of the 27 countries it tracks.

What Happened

On June 22, 2026, officers from the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots near Trans Island and De Courtrai Avenues at approximately 11:35 a.m. local time. A witness had reported seeing a gun protruding from a window at 6939 Décarie Boulevard. Three people were killed: one SPVM officer, one civilian, and the lone armed suspect, who was fatally shot by police. A second SPVM officer was critically injured and transported to hospital, where she is now in stable condition. One additional civilian sustained minor injuries.

SPVM Chief Fady Dagher confirmed at a press conference that there was no indication of a second suspect, and that the situation involved a single gunman.

Emergency Response and Lockdown

Police blocked Quebec Autoroute 15 and sections of the metro's Orange Line, and ordered residents within the boundaries of Côte-des-Neiges Road, MacDonald Street, Highway 40, and Queen Mary Road to shelter in place. Quebec's Transport Department also closed sections of the Décarie Expressway and other central city road networks.

A public safety alert was issued via radio, television, and mobile phones at around 11:30 a.m., advising residents to lock their doors and stay away from windows. The alert was lifted just after 3:00 p.m., meaning the lockdown lasted approximately three and a half hours. Jewish businesses and schools in the surrounding area also went into lockdown immediately following the incident, as the neighbourhood is home to numerous kosher restaurants, a Chabad centre, Jewish schools, and community centres.

Witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots. One resident described the scene as "complete chaos."

Evidence of an Ambush and Incel Ideology

Canadian law enforcement sources said the attack appeared to target police specifically, describing it as what "appeared to be an ambush." Video verified by CBC News captured at least 29 shots fired over 58 seconds, showing one officer falling to the ground while the second fled the position before the shooter advanced.

Radio-Canada confirmed that the gunman had distributed a violent manifesto targeting women prior to the attack. The document called for a violent revolution and invoked masculinist arguments. Law enforcement sources told CNN that the manifesto runs over 100 pages and espouses incel ideology. TVA News reported that investigators believe the suspect drove to Montreal from Alberta in the days leading up to the shooting, and characterize him as an anti-feminist whose writings lamented male loneliness and contained derogatory remarks toward women.

Political Responses

Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was "horrified" to learn that a police officer and a civilian had been killed, extending condolences to the victims, their families, first responders, and the Côte-des-Neiges community.

Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada offered her "deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and colleagues of the police officer who died in the line of duty."

Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette requested that the flag at Quebec's National Assembly be lowered to half-mast, and said she was "deeply shaken" by the events. Quebec Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafrenière urged the public not to share graphic videos circulating online, noting that "people literally died being filmed."
