The next major Mac operating system was unveiled as macOS 27 Golden Gate. Key visual changes include a more unified layout with toolbars and sidebars extending to screen edges, a consistent corner radius across all windows, and Liquid Glass effects applied directly to app icons. A system-wide Liquid Glass slider allows users to adjust intensity from ultra-clear to fully tinted. Search infrastructure has been rebuilt across Spotlight, Mail, and Photos, with new content indexed almost immediately. Developer betas are available as of WWDC day, public betas are expected in July, and the full release is slated for this fall.

Intel Mac support has ended entirely; macOS 27 will only run on Apple Silicon.

Expanded Apple Intelligence and Child Safety

Apple Intelligence features have been significantly expanded across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate. In the Passwords app, an AI agent works with Safari to detect insecure passwords and autonomously update them across individual websites. Mac users also gain Visual Intelligence, which allows them to ask questions about images and text currently on their screen.

Child Account protections have been strengthened as well. Accounts are now mandatory for children under 13 and can remain active until age 18. Apple stated that a child account "enables safeguards across the system, tailored to the child's age."

Tim Cook closed the keynote with a brief personal message and was visibly emotional. Cook is set to hand over the CEO role to John Ternus, Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, on September 1. Ternus did not appear during the keynote presentation.
