Ken Paxton Wins Texas GOP Senate Runoff, Ousting Incumbent John Cornyn

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton secured the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate on May 26, 2026, defeating incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the Republican primary runoff election. Backed by President Donald Trump, Paxton's victory has drawn search interest across multiple countries, with Kiolix Pulse tracking the "ken paxton" keyword trending in 5 of the 28 Google Search countries it monitors.

Runoff Results and Background

Paxton built a commanding early lead and never relinquished it, making him the first primary challenger to defeat an incumbent U.S. senator from Texas since Lloyd Bentsen beat Ralph Yarborough in 1970.

The two candidates had advanced to the runoff after neither cleared the 50% threshold required to avoid one in the March 3 primary. Cornyn led Paxton 42.0% to 40.5% in that initial contest. The race was called a consequential and bruising fight for the GOP Senate nomination, with national Republicans largely viewing Cornyn as the safer establishment pick.

The contest became the most expensive Senate primary in U.S. history, with Republicans spending more than $100 million combined.

Trump's Endorsement Tipped the Balance

Trump issued his endorsement of Paxton roughly one week before Election Day, while early voting was already underway. The move energized Paxton's base and put Cornyn's bid for a fifth Senate term on what analysts described as life support.

The Texas runoff was part of a broader pattern in the 2026 cycle in which Trump has successfully backed primary challengers against politicians who have displeased him. Around the same time, U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky lost his GOP primary to Trump's preferred candidate, Ed Gallrein.

During his victory speech in Plano, Texas, Paxton thanked the president directly, calling Trump's endorsement "the most powerful force in politics."

The Case Each Candidate Made

Paxton attacked Cornyn for a long Senate career marked by willingness to work across the aisle with Democrats, and for what Paxton characterized as insufficient support for Trump at critical moments. Cornyn responded by highlighting Paxton's personal controversies, including his widely reported marital infidelity and public divorce proceedings.

Jon Taylor, chair of the Department of Political Science and Geography at the University of Texas at San Antonio, said the outcome reflected a meaningful shift in Republican voter behavior — one in which a candidate carrying the weight of an impeachment and personal scandal could still prevail, provided he carried Trump's endorsement.

November General Election: Paxton vs. Talarico

Paxton will face Democratic nominee James Talarico, a state representative from Austin, in the November general election. Talarico framed the matchup as "the people versus Ken Paxton" and characterized his opponent as corrupt.

The financial gap between the two candidates heading into the general election is substantial. Talarico raised more than $27 million in the first quarter of 2026, while Paxton brought in just $2.2 million over the same period. Paxton acknowledged the fundraising disparity at his victory event and appealed directly to supporters for donations.

Paxton originally launched his Senate bid in April 2025 in an interview on Fox News host Laura Ingraham's program, declaring his intention to unseat Cornyn and pledging to advance Trump's agenda in Washington.
