Cannes 2026: Cristian Mungiu's 'Fjord' Wins the Palme d'Or at the 79th Cannes Film Festival

Romanian director claims his second top prize 19 years apart — Park Chan-wook leads jury as first Korean president in festival history

The 79th Cannes Film Festival closed its doors on May 23, 2026, with the awards ceremony held at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France. Romanian writer-director Cristian Mungiu's film Fjord took home the festival's highest honor, the Palme d'Or, capping two weeks of world cinema on the Croisette. According to Kiolix Pulse, searches related to the Cannes Film Festival surged simultaneously across 13 countries out of the 28 Google Search markets tracked, reflecting worldwide attention on the event.

Palme d'Or: Cristian Mungiu and 'Fjord'

With this win, Cristian Mungiu joins an elite group of 11 filmmakers to have claimed the Palme d'Or twice, having first won the prize in 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, his searing drama set in Communist-era Romania. The gap of 19 years between his two wins stands as one of the longer intervals in the festival's history.

Fjord stars Oscar-nominated Norwegian actress Renate Reinsve alongside American actor Sebastian Stan. The film received a 10-minute standing ovation following its Cannes premiere. Accepting the award from presenter Tilda Swinton, Mungiu reflected: "We need to wait 20 years to watch these films again and see which ones have stood the test of time."

The win extends an extraordinary streak for North American distributor Neon, which now holds U.S. distribution rights on seven consecutive Palme d'Or winners, dating back to Bong Joon-ho's Parasite in 2019.

Full Winners List

The main competition prizes were distributed across several films, with multiple categories resulting in ties.

The Grand Prix went to Andrey Zvyagintsev's Minotaur. The Jury Prize was awarded to Valeska Grisebach's The Dreamed Adventure. The Best Director award was shared in a tie between Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi for The Black Ball and Pawel Pawlikowski for Fatherland. The Best Actress prize went jointly to Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto, stars of Ryusuke Hamaguchi's All of a Sudden. Best Actor was shared between Valentin Campagne and Emmanuel Macchia, who played Belgian World War I soldiers in Lukas Dhont's Coward. The Best Screenplay award went to Emmanuel Marre for A Man of His Time.

The Camera d'Or for best first feature across the entire festival went to Marie Clémentine Dusabejambo for Ben'Imana, while the Short Film Palme d'Or was awarded to Federico Luis for For the Opponents.

The ceremony also included an Honorary Palme d'Or for Barbra Streisand, who was unable to attend in person on the advice of her doctors and delivered her acceptance via video message. Isabelle Huppert presented the award on her behalf.

Park Chan-wook: First Korean Jury President in Cannes History

The 79th edition marked a historic milestone for Korean cinema. Director Park Chan-wook served as jury president — the first Korean filmmaker ever to lead the Cannes jury. The festival described his appointment as a celebration of Korean cinema's growing global influence, citing his "inventiveness, visual mastery, and penchant for capturing the multiple impulses of the human spirit."

Park is a long-standing figure at Cannes, having won the Grand Prix for Oldboy in 2004, the Jury Prize for Thirst in 2009, and Best Director for Decision to Leave in 2022. He was joined on the jury by directors Diego Cespedes, Laura Wandel, and Chloé Zhao; actors Isaach de Bankolé, Demi Moore, Ruth Negga, and Stellan Skarsgård; and screenwriter Paul Laverty.

Red Carpet Highlight: Aishwarya Rai's Return

One of the most widely discussed moments on the Croisette came from Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, whose red carpet appearance generated significant social media response. She wore a sculptural blue couture gown by designer Amit Aggarwal — a piece called Luminara, conceived around the concept of light as energy, movement, and force. The appearance also marked Aggarwal's Cannes debut.

Aishwarya has represented L'Oreal Paris at Cannes as a global brand ambassador since 2003. At the festival, she walked the red carpet alongside fellow ambassador and actress Eva Longoria, attending the screening of The Birthday Party (Histoires De La Nuit), starring Monica Bellucci. Her appearance had been the subject of considerable speculation after her image was not included in L'Oreal's early promotional materials at the festival.
