Who Is Cole Allen? The Suspect in the White House Correspondents' Dinner Shooting
On the evening of April 25, 2026, a shooting incident disrupted the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHCD) at the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C. The suspect has been identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, and searches for his name have surged across multiple countries worldwide.
What Happened
At approximately 8:36 p.m. EDT, Allen attempted to breach a security checkpoint outside the ballroom where the dinner was underway. He charged through a metal detector screening area and fired at least one shot before being chased down and apprehended at the scene. Authorities said he was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.
A U.S. Secret Service officer was struck by gunfire during the incident but was protected by a bulletproof vest and is expected to make a full recovery. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were safely evacuated from the venue, and no other attendees were seriously injured.
The dinner drew approximately 2,600 attendees, including senior administration officials such as Vice President JD Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Who Is Cole Allen?
According to authorities and multiple news reports, Cole Tomas Allen (born April 11, 1995) was an educator and engineer based in the greater Los Angeles area.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), 2017; Master's degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2025
- Occupation: Part-time tutor at C2 Education, a test prep and tutoring company; independent video game developer

- Notable: Named "Teacher of the Month" by C2 Education in December 2024
Allen traveled to Washington by train from Los Angeles to Chicago, then onward to D.C., before checking into the Washington Hilton — the same hotel hosting the dinner — as a paying guest.
Alleged Motive and Manifesto
Authorities have described writings Allen allegedly sent to family members minutes before the attack as a "manifesto." The document stated that he intended to target officials of the Trump administration. Allen referred to himself as "The Friendly Federal Assassin" in the writings, which also included apologies to his parents, colleagues, and students, while stating, "I don't expect forgiveness."
Law enforcement and White House officials said Allen's social media accounts contained anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric. His sister, Avriana Allen, told investigators that her brother had a history of making radical statements, had attended a "No Kings" protest in California, and was associated with a group called "The Wide Awakes," a social justice activist network. After the incident, Allen's brother notified the New London Police Department in Connecticut that Allen had sent family members the manifesto prior to the shooting.
Legal Status
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced Allen faces one count of using a firearm during a crime of violence and one count of assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon, with additional charges expected as the investigation continues. Allen is currently not cooperating with investigators. The FBI has obtained search warrants for his cellphone and other electronic devices and is reviewing his written materials for evidence of motive.
The House Oversight Committee has requested a formal briefing from the Secret Service. Senator Tim Sheehy (R-MT) announced plans to introduce legislation approving construction of a White House ballroom to better secure future large-scale events attended by senior officials.
