Tucker Carlson Apologizes for Endorsing Trump: "I'm Sorry for Misleading People"

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson has publicly apologized for supporting Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign and for campaigning on his behalf. The remarks were made on April 21, 2026, during an episode of his podcast, The Tucker Carlson Show, and have drawn significant attention from political observers around the world.

"We'll Be Tormented by It for a Long Time"

Carlson made the comments in a conversation with his brother Buckley Carlson, a former Trump speechwriter. "You wrote speeches for him, I campaigned for him. I mean, we're implicated in this, for sure," he said. "It's not enough to say, 'Well, I changed my mind,' or like, 'Oh, this is bad, I'm out.' It's like in very small ways, but in real ways, you and me and millions of people like us are the reason this is happening right now."

He continued: "So I do think it's like a moment to wrestle with our own consciences. You know, we'll be tormented by it for a long time. I will be, and I want to say I'm sorry for misleading people. It was not intentional."

The Iran War as a Breaking Point

Carlson has been increasingly vocal in his criticism of Trump's handling of the war against Iran. He has described the U.S. military strikes on Iran as the "single biggest mistake" made by Trump — or any president in his lifetime — and has called Trump a "slave" to Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Carlson also said on the podcast that Trump "was fully aware of the risks" and that the decision "was a betrayal of his explicit promises for 10 years not to do this."

Trump Hits Back

The White House responded by pointing to a Truth Social post from Trump dated April 9, in which he called Carlson and other disenchanted former allies "stupid people" and "NUT JOBS" with "Low IQs." Trump specifically referred to Carlson as a "Hand Flailing Fool" who "couldn't even finish College." Over the weekend, Trump also shared a video on Truth Social urging his supporters to stop questioning his decisions — a clip that featured Carlson and other estranged allies.

A Pattern of Criticism and Reversal

This is not the first time Carlson has turned on Trump. Two days before the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, Carlson wrote in a private message that he "hate[d] him passionately," referring to Trump. That message was made public as part of Dominion Voting Systems' defamation lawsuit against Fox News, which was ultimately settled for $787.5 million. Shortly after the settlement, Carlson's show was dropped by Fox News, prompting him to launch his own independent video podcast.

A Widening Rift on the Right

Carlson is not alone in his break from Trump. Right-wing commentator Alex Jones and former Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene have both called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked to remove Trump from office. Carrie Prejean Boller, who served in a Trump-appointed role until February, called Trump an "evil psychopath," and far-right influencer Candace Owens has also grown sharply critical of the administration.
