According to KAI Daop 1 Jakarta Public Relations Manager Franoto Wibowo, the chain of events began when a green taxi struck the KRL at a direct crossing (JPL) near Bulak Kapal, forcing the commuter train to an emergency stop on the tracks. The Argo Bromo Anggrek, travelling behind on the same line, was unable to stop in time and rear-ended the stationary KRL.

Eyewitness accounts and survivor testimonies confirm that the impact was severe — the locomotive of the Argo Bromo Anggrek penetrated the rear carriages of the KRL. The affected carriage was the women-only coach at the back of the commuter train. Footage captured by YouTube channel @trainspotter_id, which was livestreaming at the time, showed the moment of impact and spread widely on social media.

Casualties

KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin provided an official update at 07:00 WIB on April 28, 2026:

  • Fatalities: 7
  • Injured: 81 (receiving treatment across 9 hospitals)
  • KA Argo Bromo Anggrek passengers: 240 confirmed safe and evacuated
  • KRL Commuter Line passengers evacuated for medical care: 38

Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency) Chief Mayjen M. Syafii confirmed that the final three survivors trapped inside the wreckage were successfully extracted by morning after approximately eight hours of rescue operations. Crews had to cut through carriage sections to facilitate the evacuation.

At RSUD dr. Chasbullah Abdulmadjid City Hospital in Bekasi, identities of 53 victims were confirmed, including three fatalities.

Cause Under Investigation

Green SM Indonesia, the operator of the electric taxi service believed to be involved, acknowledged that one of its vehicles was implicated in an incident at the crossing near Bekasi Timur Station on April 27, 2026. The company stated it had provided relevant information to authorities and is fully supporting the ongoing investigation.

KAI's working assessment is that the taxi striking the KRL caused the commuter train to halt on an active line, leading to the subsequent collision with the approaching Argo Bromo Anggrek. A formal investigation is ongoing, with police and relevant agencies cooperating closely.

KRL Service Changes and Disruptions

As a direct result of the incident, PT KAI Commuter has implemented emergency adjustments to Commuter Line operations effective April 28, 2026.

Key changes:

  • Bekasi Timur Station and Cikarang Station: Temporarily suspended for passenger boarding and alighting
  • Blue Line (Jakarta–Cikarang): All services now terminate at Bekasi Station; KA 6066B (Kampung Bandan–Cikarang) reverses at Bekasi as KA 5191B back toward Kampung Bandan
  • Other Commuter Line routes (Green, Red lines, etc.): Operating normally
  • Passengers are advised to use Bekasi Station until further notice

VP Corporate Communications KAI Anne Purba stated that resumption of full operations at Bekasi Timur Station depends on the completion of track sterilisation and verification of signal systems and overhead power lines (LAA), which may have been affected by the collision.

Long-Distance Train Cancellations

Nine long-distance train journeys departing from Gambir Station and Pasar Senen Station on April 28, 2026 were cancelled to allow unimpeded evacuation and investigation work at the site. KAI confirmed that the full 12-carriage consist of the Argo Bromo Anggrek has been moved to Bekasi Station as part of the clearance process.
